Kerala Floods: Shortage of Water in many parts of Kochi city

“Besides the shortage of water is there in many parts of Kerala.”

Despite all the pump houses working in full swing, the acute shortage of water in many parts of Kochi and its suburbs has bring about a major challenge for the ruling government.

Full-fledged supply of water after the floods began only on Wednesday last. According to the reports of the officials from the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), it has been found that around one week would be needed for water supply to become normal as water gets filled in all the sumps on the pipeline’s route before reaching the tail end.

The KWA is sending water in trucks to the islands where supply has not been restored. However, insufficient number of tanker lorries is hampering the KWA’s efforts.

A.C. Moideen, Minister for Local Self Government, who chaired a meeting in the city on Friday, asked the local governments to deploy enough number of tankers to augment the water supply.

Hibi Eden, MLA, said in a statement that there was a severe shortage of water in Elamakkara, Vaduthala, Korankkodu, Pachalam, Chittoor, Edayakunnam and Cheranelloor Ferry areas.

‘Distress for the Residents’

People from Korankkodu island in Cheranelloor panchayat have not been able to go back to their homes even after the flood waters receded as they are entirely dependent on piped water supply, said Mr. Eden.

The KWA has been asked to expedite the restoration of the pipeline to the island that was broken in the floods.

According to the KWA, work has begun to replace the broken 120-metre 110 mm HDPE underwater pipeline to the island. There are 87 families on the Korankkodu island.

Very few of them have managed to take water across on small boats. Adding to their woes is the fact that there is no jankar service to the island.

Yet another underwater pipeline that was affected is the 200-metre 150 mm HDPE duct from the Pizhala pump house to Moolampilly. This conduit too was washed away.

Work has not yet begun to replace it as the current is still high in the waters. The contractors have not taken up the work yet.
